Join Charlie-Olivia and Puppy as they seem to come to life in this fictional account of their adventures and expeditions throughout their community. The dialogue and companionship between Puppy and Charlie-Olivia is adorable, uplifting, and entertaining. As Charlie-Olivia asserts her independence while Puppy reminds her of the lessons her caregivers have taught her and to look out for danger. However, Charlie-Olivia’s imagination and courage to face her fears, often causes her to dismiss caution to live out her dreams. Puppy’s loving devotion to his curious playmate leads him to be constant guide and conscious. Puppy’s big heart and gentle hand nudges Charlie-Olivia towards her goals. The big question every wants to know is — Is puppy real? Or, is he a figment of Charlie-Olivia's vivid imagination?

How Charlie-Olivia and Puppy Came to Life

The original inspiration for this project is a simple piece of art I painted on cardboard in an art class for education majors when I was enrolled at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge around 1985 or 1986. The painting was of a little black girl in a short red dress with white polka dots, a big afro with a big bow in her hair. She was flying her kite by a huge apple tree in the midst of what seemed to have been the beginning of a thunderstorm. Her puppy is hiding behind a tree, and a red bird is bathing in a bird bath. And there is a bright yellow sun right behind the grey clouds.
